Soke Peter Morton started the Peter Morton Academy of Judo Jujitsu Karate in 1962 at Queanbeyan, New South Wales. Since this time it has operated as a not-for-profit organisation and now has branches in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
The academy teaches a practical, non-competitive self-defence style of martial art to people of all ages with an emphasis on defence. The techniques taught use an attacker’s strength to a defender’s advantage. These defensive strategies aim to initially evade, disable and finally immobilise an attacker.
The academy has many female members as the academy’s style of martial art uses technique rather than strength. It is suitable for children and adults who wish to learn a practical self-defence, not for those wishing to pursue competition.
The main basis of the syllabus is the techniques and teachings of Soke Shuho Sugita, the first Principal and Master of the Jishukan Ryu, incorporating Kodokan Judo, Jujitsu and Kempo Karate.
The senior syllabus includes some boxing and Australian Jujitsu influenced by Soke Morton’s background prior to being introduced to the Jishukan Ryu.
Classes are conducted in a semi-formal environment where students
- learn to react instinctively without a second thought
- improve coordination, reflexes, physical fitness, self control and self esteem
- learn to manoeuvre any situation to their advantage through the use of leverage, balance and momentum.
The Spirit
Soke Morton started the Academy not only with a mindset to teach and encourage fitness, but also to give a leg-up (go the extra distance, so to speak) for those less fortunate.
It is this mindset that has created a feeling of family within the Academy and not the regimented attitude that is found so often in other martial arts styles.
The spirit of Soke Morton must be perpetuated within the leadership of the Academy so that the Academy and Soke’s spirit will continue for generations to come.
Let us not lose sight of our origins and become just another martial arts school.
Mission statement
Through the Academy martial art and motto, it is the aim of the Academy to convey principles of loyalty, humility and respect to a member for the general betterment of that member, the community, the environment and the Academy.
By exposing a member to the principles and the teachings of the Academy, hopefully that member will remain committed to the art by dedicating energy to learning and improving their state of awareness of self-discipline, self-esteem, self-confidence and general health and well being of mind, body and spirit.
